 Enkele maanden geleden verschenen de eerste screenshots van Call of Duty: World at War. De oplettende fan wist het al vrij snel: in World at War zal er ook een missie zijn waarin je in een vliegtuig een Japanse vloot moet bestoken. En dat klopt. Aangezien in de oorlog tussen Amerika en Japan veel zeeslagen zijn geweest, is een missie op zee natuurlijk onmisbaar in Call of Duty: World at War. Daarom vandaag een special over de PBY Catelina.
De PBY Catalina, ook wel gewoon Catalina genoemd, was een in Amerika ontworpen vliegboot of watervliegtuig, dat niet alleen op het water, maar ook op een landingsbaan kon landen. Het vliegtuig is met circa 3290 exemplaren het meest gebouwde watervliegtuig.

De PBY Catelina was een multifunctioneel watervliegtuig dat een heel belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dit vliegtuig kon een beperkte lading bommen droppen op land en beschikte over zware machinegeweren maar was vooral gespecialiseerd in het droppen ban dieptebommen en torpedo's waardoor het vijandige schepen en duikboten zware klappen kon toebrengen. Gezien dit vliegtuig zonder problemen op water kon landen werd het tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog een belangrijke troef in de strijd tegen de Japanners. Geen wonder dat voor dit vliegtuig ook in Call of Duty: World at War een hoofdrol is weggelegd. De missie
In de elfde missie van World at War, genaamd "Black Cats", ben je een bemanningslid in een Catalina. Het eerste doel is om enkele Japanse schepen nar de haaien te schieten. Je moet steeds naar een andere gun overstappen, aangezien de bemanning ietwat aan de kleine kant is. Als je deze opdracht voltooid hebt vlieg je met de Catalina een stuk verder, waar een vloot van de gealieerden drijft. De vloot wordt aangevallen een enorme vlaag van Japanse kamikaze-vliegtuigen, en jij zet de tegenaanval in. Meer verklap ik niet, dat doe ik nu al veel te veel!
 
The making of....
De makers hebben alle data die ze konden verzamelen over dit vliegtuig verwerkt in hun 3D-model dat tot in de kleinste details is nagebouwd. Een vliegtuig nabouwen op de PC is al heel wat, maar ervoor zorgen dat de 3D-modellen van soldaten zich op een realistische manier door dit vliegtuig bewegen is een volgend probleem. Want hoe weet je als animator hoe de soldaten en piloten zich precies gedroegen aan boord van dit vliegtuig? Konden ze rechtop staan of moesten ze bukken wanneer ze van het ene deel naar het andere liepen? Daarom werd door de makers een houten frame van het vliegtuig nagemaakt in een motion capture studio. Op die manier kunnen stuntmannen, die worden uitgerust met een zwart pak vol witte motion capture referentiebollen, zich door het houten frame voortbewegen en allerlei handelingen verrichten zoals het plaatsnemen achter de stuurknuppel. Deze geregistreerde bewegingen worden dan verwerkt en overgedragen naar een virtueel skelet, zodat de 3D-modellen bewegen op een manier zoals een mens dat zou doen. En dat is voor een game als Call of Duty: World at War, waar het realisme hoog in het vaandel staat, erg belangrijk.
